World Music Day | Duro IKUJENYO & The Age of Aquarius

Former Fela KUTI’s keyboardist Duro IKUJENYO will perform with his band from Lagos, The Age of Aquarius, at the Institut français du Nigéria on Friday, 24th of June 2022 at 8PM.

Durotimi is a musician, band leader and producer. Born 2 September 1956 as the 4 th born of 7 children into the royal family of Ijebu Mushin Ogun State Nigeria. Started singing at the age of 3 and became a chorister in his father`s choir, distinguished himself by winning the best singing prize thrice between 1959 and 1970. Attended various schools between 1962 and 1974, St Luke’s primary school Jos, St Johns College Jos, St Paul’s (kufena) College Zaria, and CMS Grammar School, Lagos. Between 1974 and 1978 studied music (specifically the piano) at the royal music board in London under the tutelage of music instructor of Kobina Crepy who taught Fela Kuti, Segun Bucknor, and Victor Uwaifor.

Duro met Fela Anikulapo Kuti in 1974 after high school and became inducted to the philosophy of African unity. Together with Lemi Ghariokwu and Kayode Idowu, he became the secretary of young African pioneer (YAP), a think tank of the movement of the people (MOP) lead by Fela. Duro gave lectures on African unity in various universities in Nigeria. Played piano on Fela’s songs including Unknown Soldier, Perambulator, Original Suffer Head, Authority Stealing ITT, Power Show, Army Arrangement, Africa Center of the World and MOP between 1979 and 1983. Toured with the Egypt 80 band between 1979 and 1983. Formed his band in 1985 drawing on the philosophical view related to the discovery of space in the 1950s and awareness of materials and spiritual changes from the age of Pisces to Aquarius. He believes that a new age of Aquarius will move the world into a state of global peace, harmony and end all form of oppression, poverty, exploitation especially in the developing world.
